Clint Bowyer captured his very first win at Bristol Motor Speedway Saturday afternoon in the Sharpie MINI 300.
The race was halted at lap 171 due to rain.
Bowyer was able to hold off runner-up Kasey Kahne, who won the Food City 250 Nationwide Series event here last August. David Reutimann finished third, followed by Brad Keselowski, Mike Bliss, Jason Leffler, Kevin Harvick, David Ragan, David Stremme and Mike Wallace.
The 28-year-old Chevrolet driver, who also will race in Sunday's Food City 500 Sprint Cup race (2 p.m. start) at BMS, was happy to get the win.
"This feels awesome," he said. "I'll take it anyway I can get it. This is a special track and when you roll into victory lane here, you know you've earned it."
Kahne felt like he could have gotten around Bowyer, but wasn't sure how close the rain was and didn't want to push his luck too early in the race.
"In the last 30 laps, I felt like we had the best car," said Kahne. "We got to Clint and his car was wide and he did everything he could to hold us off. If I had known 171 was going to be the last lap I probably would have been by him a couple of laps before. I was trying everything I could to get by him without running through him. I could have forced the issue if I had stayed in the throttle but I just didn't know (when the rain was coming)."
Reutimann too felt he might have had a better run had he known the rain was coming.
There's a lot of weather forecasters on the pit box and my spotter kept telling me it was raining," he said. "I could see it on the windshield and I was going as hard as I could go, but the rain came and stopped it."
